Swine Flu

virus Apr 30, 2009 - Industrial agriculture wreaks havoc upon the environment, mercilessly slaughters 50 billion animals worldwide each year, and inflicts numerous health problems upon consumers of its products. Factory farming also has a dubious distinction of being a facilitator for the mutation of viruses, possibly including the current "swine" flu virus.

In Memory: Leland

leland the turkey Feb 2, 2009 - For nine years, you wowed crowds with your strutting display, your tail feathers proudly flashing. You tried to impress the turkey girls - they clucked and turned away. You attempted to woo the chickens - they ran away in horror. So you turned to us humans, following us around, vibrating your feathers to make an impressive whirring sound.

Dead Zones on the Rise

dead ocean Feb 2, 2009 - No, they aren't the subject of a future vamp flick, but they are sucking the life out of the oceans. A dead zone is an area of water so low in oxygen it cannot sustain life. Dead zones happen when, for a variety of reasons, there is a sudden upsurge in photosynthesizing phytoplankton. The phytoplankton produce organic matter that sinks to the bottom of the ocean where it is gobbled up by oxygen-loving bacteria. More organic matter means more bacteria and thus less oxygen. Fish, crabs and other sea life suffer the consequences and can die off.

California Victory: Prop 2 Passes!

hens and layer boxes Nov 5, 2008 - What it does: Ends the cruel confinement of egg-laying hens, veal calves and pregnant sows. Requires protected animals to turn around and stretch their limbs. It is a modest proposal that would improve the lives of 19 million animals in California.

In a landslide victory, Proposition 2 has passed with a margin of nearly 2:1 in favor of the measure. This is an enormous win for animals and will improve the welfare of nearly 19 million animals in the state of California.

Thank you for voting Yes and making history for the animals. To all the dedicated volunteers and donors who made this campaign happen - thank you, you've made this pipe dream a reality for the hens, calves and pigs affected by this measure.

Animal Spotlight: Howie & Nicholas Reunited

cattle howie and nicholas Oct 4, 2008 - Howie is a little older and slowing down a bit. Due to some severe arthritis, he spent some solo time on vet-approved stall rest. After two weeks, it was time to let Howie out. We were not sure how the other two bovines, Sadie & Nicholas would take it - they had kept a vigil near Howie's enclosure, so we assumed they would be happy at his release.

What we didn't expect was the love-fest between Howie and Nicholas. For hours, they would groom one another, bump heads and maintain physical contact with one another. What a joyous reunion! By the end of the day, Nicholas' head was a giant spit-ball, though he was definitely squeaky clean. It is beyond our understanding how anyone can claim cattle and other farmed animals don't have emotions or can't form bonds. Howie and Nicholas show otherwise!

Rescued Chicks Safe and Sound

mail-order chicks Oct 3, 2008 - Twenty-five day-old chicks born in a hatchery in Iowa made a long journey via the postal service to a home in California. Upon arrival, seven of the chicks were dead. The recipient claimed to have never bought the birds, and the hatchery refused to take them back. Silicon Valley Animal Services took in the birds but realized quickly they were not equipped to handle 18 cheeping, needy chicks. They called Animal Place and we agreed to take them.

California Governor Signs Downer Cattle Law

sadie - former dairy cow Jul 25, 2008 - A loophole that permitted the sale of flesh from downed animals (unable to walk to the kill floor) has been closed. AB 2098 (Krekorian) makes it a misdemeanor to kill a nonambulatory animal or sell her flesh for human consumption.

Animal Place is pleased this bill has been signed into law, though we realize the only way to stop the suffering of farmed animals is for consumers to make compassionate food choices.

Baby Goats Make Their Debut

mother and kid goat Jun 25, 2008 - Adele is one of the six goats and two sheep Animal Place took in from a slaughterhouse in Watsonville. She was pregnant and recently gave birth to two healthy kids, a boy and girl. They spend their days climbing the other goats, pretending they can eat hay and keeping a close eye on Adele (lest she try and make off with their milk). Kids are exuberant bundles of energy, making life very interesting at the sanctuary.

Celebrate a Cruelty-Free Easter

chick Mar 18, 2008 - Every year, a few months post-Easter, we field rabbit and chicken calls. The same story is repeated - a family or school buys a cute baby rabbit or chick only to lose interest when the animal gets larger. Most of these animals end up in shelters where they will be killed. This doesn't need to happen.

Investigation Reveals Slaughterhouse Horrors

sadie the cow Feb 21, 2008 - By now, you've probably read or seen one of the over 2,000 media accounts involving the cruel treatment of cows sent to slaughter and the subsequent recall of 143-million pounds of beef. Cruelty charges are being laid, schools are making sure their beef isn't from the Chino, CA slaughter- house and legislation is being proposed to close a loophole that permits downed animals from entering the human food chain.

Morningstar Farms To Use Fewer Eggs!

egg-laying hen photo Dec 13, 2007 - Compassion Over Killing and Vegan Outreach spearheaded a campaign to convince Morningstar Farms (subsidiary of Kellogg) to offer more vegan options by eliminating eggs in their products. Animal Place joined the campaign, contacting Kellogg and encouraging supporters to do so as well. Kellogg received thousands of letters! According to Compassion Over Killing, Kellogg has agreed to eliminate a minimum of one million eggs from Morningstar Farms products in 2008. This is a great step in the right direction.

Thank Kellogg by phoning 1-800-962-1413 and press 9.

Don't Gift a Goat!

don't gift a goat photo Dec 6, 2007 - The photos are cute: bright-eyed, smiling children embracing doe-eyed, happy animals. Some of the animals even have digitally added gift tags around their necks for that extra-special holiday cheer! For $45-500 US dollars, you can put money into a general fund of an organization who may or may not take a perfectly intelligent, emotional animal, transport them to a poor family in a far off land who will raise and slaughter them. Charming.

In Memory – Eve

Eleven years ago, Animal Place welcomed a beautiful Merino sheep. She was supposed to be an Easter BBQ, but was saved by a kind individual. Eve never got over her fear of humans…except when sweet grain was involved! She spent her days wandering up and down Sheep Hill. The last few years, she enjoyed tottering around the sanctuary, bleating for some food from her human caregivers. On March 27, Eve passed away. We fondly remember her beautiful face, ear-splitting yell for food, and her “old-lady” walk. She is missed, but we are all thankful for having known her.

In Memory of Brenda-Grace

January 1, 1997 – April 15, 2006

Nine years ago, she came to us - a bright, pink piglet saved by two vet students from eventual slaughter. Named after her rescuers, Brenda-Grace quickly made it known she was no ordinary pig, no, she was a royal pig. It was not long before she ascended to the top of our porcine hierarchy and took the role of The Matriarch. Every animal respected her, even our defiant 2,000 pound steer, Howie. She led by example - she was always dignified, always ready for human attention, and always ready for food (in which case the "dignity" rule was ignored).

Compassion in Action - Emergency Chicken Rescue

Sunday, August 15, 2005
They came in the dead of night, twenty crates full of hens rescued from an egg-laying operation and certain death. Seven hundred saved - all individual representatives of those birds who were not so lucky. Dedicated volunteers unloaded the frightened birds from their final cage and into a large enclosure. Birds, who never knew the ground, now clumsily walked upon it. Hens, who never knew freedom, stretched their wings. Thanks to Animal Place, several rescue organizations and kind-hearted individuals, these birds begin the life meant for them - the life of free chickens.

February 8, 2007

We applaud Maple Leaf and Smithfield corporations for phasing out sow gestation crates that prohibit female pigs from turning around or properly bonding with their young. But don't be fooled into thinking this phase out means pigs raised for food consumption or breeding are going to have "the good life".
