The animals need YOU!
If you live in California, join us for a historic effort at improving the welfare of 20 million farmed animals in the state!

Find out how you can help!
Issue: #2 January/2008
Farmed animals are in the news, and in a big way. The country is paying attention to the plight of non-ambulatory "downer" cows in slaughterhouses. Thousands are reading about the impact eating meat has on our environment. Industry and the public are more aware of the ever-growing presence of animal rights groups.

It's still a tough time to be a farmed animal. But we're making progress, we're changing behavior, and we're making a difference. Realize your power and do something to make life better for the nonhumans who share our space.

These cows aren't happy

Sadie, a former dairy cowAn investigation by an animal welfare group reveals disturbing treatment of downer cows at a Southern California slaughterhouse. Animals are stabbed with electric prods, sprayed in the nose and mouth with high-power water hoses, and rolled onto pronged forklifts - all violations of federal law.

Rethinking the meat guzzler
A New York Times article by Mark Bittman details the effects meat production has on our environment. Health problems and animal cruelty are mentioned in passing.

Rethinking the meat guzzler

Highlights:
- The United States comprises 5% of the world's population, yet slaughters 15% of the world's total farmed animals (10 billion).
- A third of all ice-free land is directly/indirectly involved in meat, dairy and egg production.
- Nearly 20% of all greenhouse gases are produced by the livestock industry.
- Two to five times more grain is required to produce the same caloric amount through livestock than direct consumption of grain.
- Americans consume twice the maximum, suggested allowance of animal protein a day! Humans only need about 30 grams of protein a day, yet Americans consume around 110 grams.

The production of animal products is a burden to the environment, our bodies and necessarily cruel to animals.

Reduce and eliminate - it isn't hard to do!
Can't Get Enough of it Corn Dip
A great Superbowl party appetizer!

A chef from our past Veggie Cook-Offs adapted her favorite dairy-based recipe to fit her vegetarian lifestyle. There is something about the combination of the lime juice, cilantro and jalapeno that makes this appetizer a hit!

Ingredients
16    oz. Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese (plain)
5    Tbs. fresh lime juice
2    Tbs. soy mayonnaise (Vegenaise is the best!)
4    Tbs. pickled jalapeno peppers, minced
2    cups corn kernels (fresh or frozen/thawed or canned/well drained)
5    Tbs. fresh cilantro, minced
2    green onions, chopped
½    tsp. salt
1    tsp. cayenne pepper sauce
½    red bell pepper, chopped

Directions
Beat cream cheese, lime juice and soy mayonnaise together until smooth. Stir in remaining ingredients. Adjust seasonings to taste. Cover and chill. Serve with corn chips
